Tip for Selling Lots (i.e. boxes of old albums or cds)

Here a few tips and thoughts in trying to sell box(es) of old albums or cds.

  1. Inventory your lot.  This is the hardest part of this if your lot is large, but it is much easier to sell if prospective buyers know exactly what you have to offer. Inventory should include; Title, Artist, year of release, serial number and condition of recording, cover and its accompanying materials.

  2. While doing inventory, pull out really damaged recordings. Those that are unplayable. Even those with badly damaged covers may be unsaleable. Note: some unplayable albums may still have worth if their cover and accompanying items are in great shape- provided they are unique (i.e. Rolling Stones' "Their Satanic Majesty's Request" has a holographic front cover). We suggest breaking larger lots into smaller lots. Group by genre or era or condition.

  3. Decide what you are willing to sell them for . Obvious right? Well are they a package deal, or will you allow someone to buy only what they want which may dilute your lot? Keep in mind that records/albums are only as valuable as a buyer is willing to pay. And that may be contigent on the items being in mint condition. Do a little research. Ignore the big prices you'll see, look at how many of your items are being sold. If you are selling X and there are thousand X's on the market, yours probably isn't that valuable unless it has something that differentiates it from the pack. Lastly, don't forget shipping costs in your price.

  4. In regards to shipping costs, consider geography . Do you want to ship or would you rather to meet face to face? If you ship you take the chance of shipping damage or that the buyer will be disappointed and then there could be cost to get your lot back or a long distance argument.

  5. To list your lot on YKEEP as an entire package ; a) type LOT in Artist/Author, b) In title list how many in your lot, (c) Keep lots to all the same media. If you have CDs and LPs together list two lots, one for CDs and one for LPs, (d) give an average quality rating and last describe in short what you have. Members will be able to email you to find out more details.

There are still record dealers out there who relish old recordings. Here are a couple of resources  but it is far from comprehensive. Feel free to contact us with questions or use our below album/lp focused search. Understand that YKEEP is not a record dealer, though we love vinyl and will consider trading .
